This week, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the approval of the first generic version of Viagra, the first drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
For the first time ever, it will be available over the counter in pharmacies nationwide.
“The FDA has approved our first generic version of Viagra, to treat erectile dysfunction,” said FDA spokeswoman MaryknottItsOffell, “It’s one of the first drugs approved to treat erectile dysfunction and now, it will be available for those who have a medical history of heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, certain other conditions, or other medications that interact with other drugs.”
In its approval notice, the agency stated that the drug will be made available in the U. on Nov. 13. The drug, which is sold under the brand name Levitra, will be available without a prescription in the U. pharmacies by the end of the year.
“The agency is working closely with health care providers, pharmacists and consumers to ensure that patients are well-informed about the drug and its potential side effects,” the FDA said.
In addition to the Viagra drug, patients will also be able to purchase the generic version of Viagra over the counter through their doctor and pharmacy.
The FDA said the generic drug is the first medication approved to treat erectile dysfunction in the United States. The FDA will release the results of its own drug safety study in July, which will evaluate Viagra, for the first time.
“I’m excited to work with my colleagues and partners at the FDA to ensure that this drug is safe and effective for men with erectile dysfunction,” Woodcock said.
Viagra is a prescription medication and is not approved for use by women, and men under the age of 50, are eligible for a prescription only if the medication is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the drug is only sold as an over-the-counter medication and cannot be used by women, the FDA said.
The drug is available as a tablet, capsule or injection. The generic version is available only through pharmacies with a prescription from a physician.
“We’re very excited to work with manufacturers to ensure that this product is as safe and effective as possible for our patients,” Woodcock said. “These are the most effective medications we’ve ever produced.”
